We Need More Games in the Mario Sports Series – Wallstrom’s Blog

I was very happy when Nintendo announced Mario Golf: Super Rush during Direct. Very few games have been released in the Mario Sports series. We already have Mario Tennis Aces for Switch, but that’s the only thing. There are many entertaining titles in his sports world that Nintendo can use. We have the soccer game Mario Smash Football (Super Mario Strikers outside Europe and Australia) which was released for Gamecube and the sequel to Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii. However, this came in 2007, so it’s been 14 years since we got something in the series. Now is the time.

So is Super Lazy Mario. It was only released in the US and Japan for the Wii in 2008, so in Europe we didn’t enjoy this baseball game. It might not be the most entertaining game for the fans, but it is a sports Mario game that you can enjoy without knowing the rules. However, we did get the first game in the short series, Mario Superstar Baseball. It was released for Gamecube in 2005. We have to turn to Wii and Gamecube to find these sports as there seems to be no interest from Nintendo in making new games.

We got Mario Sports Superstars for the 3DS, which is a game that included five sports. Plus the Olympic Games where Sonic is included. But I want pure solo sports, preferably with a cutting edge story. I think hockey would work well. It can sell well in both the northern parts of Europe and North America. Basketball will do well in the US and definitely in Eastern Europe (the last time we got Mario Slam Basketball for DS in 2007). But maybe this is something we will never see. I think Nintendo will stick to the two series they have now, golf and tennis, and release games every four years or so. We must be happy with the little things.
