A new “Pushing Hand” gesture that looks like a high pentagon is shortlisted for potential new emojis to be released later this year. Also includes: a wiggle face, a gingerbread handle, and a hair drop for styling woven strands.
Emojipedia, a popular emoji reference site, released sample images Wednesday of more than a dozen new emoji that have been submitted for approval to the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization that oversees global emoji standards and new releases.
The draft list also includes the maracas, a much-awaited pink heart, and the Khanda, a traditional symbol of the Sikh faith. The potential additions come with mounting pressure in recent years for Emojis to be more comprehensive
Keith Bruni, Editor-in-Chief of Emojipedia, said at Blog post
Accompanying new images released ahead of World Emoji Day this Sunday.
Final approval by Unicode is due in September. The emojis will then be released as software updates for major platforms from late 2022 to 2023.
Bruni confirmed that the images released by Emojipedia are previews and subject to change or final approvals, but said that every emoji the group has previewed last year — like as a pregnant man
– It was included in the final offering.
The new options come as emoji use on Twitter hits record levels, according to Analytics
Released by Emojipedia. Its data indicated that emoji usage this month and last month was at “the highest instances of emoji per tweet since our records began in July 2011.”
