PROSPECT HEIGHTS – Scholarship Aid Fund (SAF) Dollars for Scholars held its 2022 Scholarship Reception on June 17 at Hawthorne Global Aviation Services in Wheeling.
The two-hour gathering focused on the educational achievements and endeavors of this year’s scholarship recipients. The one-year academic scholarships were awarded to the following high school graduates for 2022: Matthew Allaire (Buffalo Grove High), Melina Blanc (Hersey High), Grace Cuvierres (Elk Grove High), Elizabeth Verazza (Hersey High), Jeongmin Lee (Prospect High) ), Santiago Leyva (Rolling Meadows High), Justin Meyer (Rolling Meadows High), Yalixa Segundo (Wheeling High), Natalia Soro (Prospect High). A one-year academic scholarship was also awarded to: Grace Groeling (Hersey High ’20) who is currently a student at Loyola-Chicago University.
Each year, SAF Dollars for Scholars also awards the $4,000 Charles E. Priester Academic Scholarship, named in honor of Charles E. Priester, one of the founders of the SAF Dollars for Scholars chapter. Sidney Lee, a 2022 graduate of Buffalo Grove High School, is this year’s Priester Scholarship recipient.
The George and Christine Wenande Academic Scholarship was awarded to Emily Buterin (Hersey High ’20) who is currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago and to Santino Macaggi (Buffalo Grove High ’22). The $4,000 Winandy Academic Scholarship is awarded to students majoring in science, mathematics, computer technology, education, music, or nursing.
The Lyn J. Kearns Academic Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Stavros (Wheeling High ’19) and she is currently a student at Illinois State University. The $4,000 Cairns Academic Scholarship is awarded to a student who specializes in education or nursing.
The Nicholas J. Helmer Academic Scholarship of $4,000 was awarded to Gabriel Dubowsky, a 2022 graduate of Hersey High School. This scholarship is named in memory of Prospect Heights Mayor Nicholas J Helmer and is awarded to a student residing in Prospect Heights or Wheeling.
Through the SAF Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Program, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community organization, raises funds to help residents of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, and Rolling Meadows, and Wheeling achieve their educational goals after high school. SAF Dollars for Scholars is a chapter of Scholarship America®, the largest private non-profit scholarship organization in the country.
The US Dollar for Scholars Foundation maintains one fundraising per year in support of its scholarship program. On August 22, the annual golf outing will be held at Rolling Green Country Club in Arlington Heights. The $175/$650 quad registration fee includes a round of golf, golf cart, lunch, reception, and golf. Silent auctions and raffles are also available. Care is still available.
