The macOS update fixes charging issues on the older MacBook Pro. If not, you can replace the battery for free

Apple has sent a minor update to macOS Big Sur (11.2.1) and macOS Catalina (10.15.7) which it says will fix Macbook Pros loading issue from 2016/2017. In the macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 update, Apple wrote:

MacOS Big Sur 11.2.1 addresses an issue that may prevent battery charging on some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models, and some features may not be available in all regions or on all Apple devices. Apple also announced that there appear to be a handful of users whose MacBook Pro still doesn’t charge properly after a recent update. Therefore, Apple has also launched an alternative program for these models, which means that if you have software in your computer that still does not charge the battery, you can replace it for free.
