Japanese e-commerce billionaire Yusaku Maezawa announced yesterday that he is looking for eight people who want to go with him and SpaceX to the moon. Maezawa’s idea of planning to be the first to go to the moon with the upcoming Starship spacecraft from SpaceX became evident in 2018, but since then it has been fairly quiet about the “dear moon” project.
Maezawa bought all the passenger seats on the Starship’s trip to the moon and actually said in 2018 that he wanted to offer the remaining eight seats to the public, something he talked about a little more yesterday. It was originally said that the eight who will be offered places on the moon voyage will be artists, without specifying what this actually means. Yesterday, Mizawa said that anyone who considers themselves creative in any way can get a chance to keep up with the moon.
In addition to being creative, those chosen for the dearMoon journey must meet two criteria. Maezawa says:
1. “Whatever activity you do, by going into space, I hope you can push his circumstance, to help others and the larger community in some way.”
2. “You have to be willing and able to support other crew members who share similar aspirations.”
DearMoon’s journey aims to erupt around the moon and is scheduled to last for six days. In total, there will be 10-12 people on board the Starship. Everything is set to happen early in 2023, which sounds like a somewhat optimistic schedule given that SpaceX Starship is not as far from ready for inhabited space travel as it appears at present.
