The European Space Agency (ESA) announced yesterday that it will soon begin, for the first time since 2008, recruiting new astronauts. It will be the fourth time since the recruitment of astronauts in 1978 that such a recruitment has been carried out.
The European Space Agency has written that they are looking for future astronauts with different backgrounds. The prerequisites are for the applicant to be a citizen of one of the ESA member countries, namely Sweden, who have a master’s degree in something related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics or a pilot and can speak fluent English.
The European Space Agency is also investing in being the first-ever space agency to recruit astronauts of any type of disability. This is something ESA calls a “Parastronaut Feasibility Project” and it is written about this:
“Inclusivity: If there is one thing that we have learned through working on the International Space Station (ISS), it is that there is great value to diversity. Inclusion of people with special needs also means benefiting from their extraordinary experience, and the ability to adapt to difficulties. Environments and point of view.” .
Applications for the ESA astronaut program will begin on May 28 and in October 2022, the European Space Agency hopes to be able to present the results of these programs.
