The Nintendo Switch reached a total of 68.30 million hardware sales, officially overtaking NES to become Nintendo’s second best selling home console ever.
The figure comes from Nintendo’s latest financial earnings report, which reveals that the console moved 12.53 million units in the six months between April and September 2020. The table below shows Nintendo’s main console hardware sales are correct as of September 2020.
Control unit | Hardware sales (million) | Software sales (million) |
Wei | 101.63 | 921.85 |
Nintendo Switch | 68.30 | 456.49 |
miscellaneous | 61.91 | 500.01 |
SNES | 49.10 | 379.06 |
Nintendo 64 | 32.93 | 224.97 |
The cube game | 21.74 | 208.57 |
Wii U | 13.56 | 103.27 |
Of course, the Switch’s hybrid nature means it can also be classified as a portable console, although it still has a small way to drop any of the previous Nintendo laptops. It’s likely to reach and outshine the 3DS first, which currently has total sales of 75.94 million units.
Interestingly, the original Switch model represented 57.93 million units out of 68.30 million sales units; Switch Lite has converted 10.36 million units in the shortest lifetime in the market.
Let us know if you think the Switch has what it takes to bypass the Wii and become a bestselling home console. Can it even handle the whopping DS total of 154.02 million? Share your opinion in the comments.
