Stylish portable speaker, designed for indoor and outdoor use. It’s Sonos Roam, which will premiere in Sweden on April 20. Priced? Just under 2,000 Swedish kronor.
Like the Sonos Move launched in 2019, the Roam has a built-in battery and Bluetooth support. But unlike the Move, Roam is actually like something you can imagine in flight. Weight less than 500g, Roam is 2.5kg lighter than its predecessor.
The Roam has two Class H amplifiers, a triple element and a racetrack-shaped midrange element, but it remains to be seen how powerful the sound is in such a compact unit.
For outdoor use it can be helpful to know that the battery life is ten hours after a full charge. This applies to playtime: in sleep mode, it should have been alive for up to ten days. The speaker is IP67 rated, which should provide protection against dust and moisture. Silicone caps on each end should protect the device from potential impacts.
Walk around with the “voice switch” function
When used indoors, compared to the Move, the Roam appears to be better equipped to live with the rest of the range in the Sonos ecosystem. For example, the user does not have to choose between Bluetooth or wifi to play audio. In addition, Roam has a “voice switch” function that pushes a button to send the sound from the Roam to the home amplifier closest to the mobile device.
Alongside these innovations, there are things Sonos users can now expect: smart features with support for various types of voice assistants and automatic “trueplay”, where volume is tuned according to the environment of the speaker.
