Foreign Minister Haavisto participates in an informal video meeting of EU foreign ministers on 19 November 2020. The meeting agenda includes multilateral cooperation and a discussion with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki.
The foreign ministers will discuss how the EU can contribute to strengthening the rules-based international order. Finland considers it important for the European Union to work actively in this field. Global challenges, such as arms control, climate change and pandemics, require global solutions and multilateral cooperation. Finland supports UN reform and stresses the importance of the EU taking an active role and staying united.
With the Palestinian Foreign Minister الخارجية Riad Al-Malkin Foreign ministers discuss holding Palestinian elections and the possibility of continuing peace talks with Israel. Finland believes that the EU, in its discussions with the Palestinian Authority, should stress the importance of holding elections. The construction of settlements and other illegal acts on Palestinian land are contrary to international law. In the conflict between Israel and Palestine, it remains pivotal that a two-state solution based on international law and previous agreements be reached through negotiations.
The US Secretary of State will also briefly discuss the US elections, while a more comprehensive discussion on transatlantic relations will take place in December. Finland will also present a progress report on the donors’ conference for Afghanistan, which Finland is organizing in cooperation with the Afghan government and the United Nations in Geneva from November 23-24.
